The Anchor Store

Susan Shadetree worked as a tutor a Sunday school teacher and two part time jobs, because: One she loved to shop and dress and two she couldn’t get a job working as a public school teacher without the proper credentials. And for that she’d have to go back to college another two years. Still, Mrs. Shadetree was the first Negro woman to work the soda fountain in the big downtown department store that was the place Colored women could work in public. She was there until the minute they closed. The day she died, they imploded the building. A chick I was banging, let’s just call her Um, rented a room in a high rise hotel so she cool see the devastation first hand. I got high and watched porn on the big TV until I fell asleep. She woke me up yelling “Fuck you Periwinkle.” Like I had done something. The cloud of toxic duct completely sand blasted and covered the windows of the room and the north face of the hotel. Two weeks later, William Shadetree Senior, dropped a supercharged Bowtie 501, tranny, bell housing and UV joint on his head. I want to be in love like that man. I helped Bubba the third clean up the mess. It was something to do that day to keep me from feeling like doing something similar, just less messy.
